Colon and Rectal Services
The human bowel consists of the colon and the rectum. The function of the colon is to process the excrement of the body into solid stool and prepare it for evacuation. The function of the rectum coordinates the process of evacuation.
Unfortunately, many Americans experience difficulty with the colon and rectum, caused by many contributing factors. The most common issues regarding the colon and rectum can be broken down into the following areas:
Functional Disorders: These are the most common problems and include disorders in which the bowel appears normal in examination but doesn't work properly.
Constipation: Difficult or infrequent stools that cause a person to strain during a bowel movement and contribute to the development of other anal problems.
Structural Disorders: Conditions in which there is something visually abnormal with the colon or rectum that requires an operation to remove, alter or repair the area.
Anal Disorders: These include conditions such as internal and external hemorrhoids, anal fissures, perianal abscess, Fistula-in-ano, and others.
Other Perianal Disorders: These can include infected ingrown hairs, abscess and some sexually transmitted diseases that affect the area.
