At the 2011 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) Annual Meeting on March 27th, experts presented a new study that revealed promising numbers and facts on the affects of using Sublingual Immunotherapy to treat peanut allergies in children.
Peanuts, a member of the legume family, can cause extremely severe allergic reactions to those who possess a sensitivity, and can sometime lead to death. According to AllergicChild.com, associate professor of pediatrics at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and researcher in the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute Scott Sicherer reports that approximately 80% of people with this particular allergy react in such a way that constricts breathing or affects multiple areas of their bodies simultaneously.
Currently, there are no known effective treatments for peanut protein allergies, but SLIT presents a promising solution.
Does your child or a child you know suffer from a peanut allergy? If so, what are you doing to manage their condition? Would you try SLIT?
