Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)

Jefferson Surgical offers the innovative and recently developed technique of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) to treat allergies. SLIT desensitizes individuals to allergens over time through the administration of small doses of allergen extracts that are placed beneath the tongue. The sublingual solution interacts with the immune system to decrease the allergic reactions and, over time, develops a tolerance against these allergies.

SLIT is different than medications in that instead of simply treating the symptoms of allergies, it safely and effectively modifies the underlying allergic sensitivity in adults, reducing the natural progression of allergic diseases triggered by catalysts, including food sensitivities, bacteria, mold, pollen, eczema, allergic rhinitis, and asthma.

Since SLIT only requires patients to remember to put drops of their allergen solutions under the tongue, this method for managing and improving allergies is easier and more comfortable than common alternatives, such as prescription medication, nasal sprays, and allergy shots.

Jefferson Surgical’s Dr. Zachmann, Dr. Harter, and Dr. Lenkowski are board certified otolaryngologists and are trained and certified to start patients on an SLIT program.
