Dr. Zachmann HeadshotHow do I know whether my symptoms are related to chronic sinusitis or are caused from allergies?

Chronic sinusitis is a relatively common condition involving recurrent episodes of inflammation of the sinuses (the cavities around your nasal passages.) Inflamed sinuses can cause blockages, pressure in your nasal cavity and trouble breathing.

Hearing loss and depressionAge-related hearing impairment (ARHI) affects more than just the ability to hear – it can lead to feelings of social isolation, depression and possibly cognitive decline.

The connection between ARHI and cognitive decline has grown in recent years, with more studies finding associations between the two.

A study of 639 senior citizens determined that the rate of cognitive decline grew linearly with the amount of hearing loss the person experienced. The research also showed that the presence of mild, moderate or severe hearing impairment respectively corresponded with a 2-, 3-, or 5-fold increase in the risk of developing dementia.

cholesterolMore than 100 million American adults have higher-than-recommended cholesterol levels, with 35 percent of them at a high risk for heart disease – the leading cause of death in the U.S.

September is National Cholesterol Education Month, designed to encourage people to get their levels checked and take appropriate steps to lower them if necessary. For adults, total cholesterol levels should be below 170 mg/dL. Levels should be checked at least every five years for individuals over the age of 20.

PROSTATEResearch into prostate cancer – the most common non-skin cancer in American men – has helped lower the U.S. death rate by more than 50%.

Approximately 13 out of 100 American men will get prostate cancer during their lifetime, with two to three dying from it. African-Americans and those with a family history of the disease are at a higher risk for the disease. Still, it remains a cancer that many men don’t want to think or talk about.

BackToSchool 300x200Germs run rampant through schools’ hallways, classrooms, bathrooms and cafeterias, making it a challenge to keep our children healthy during the school year.

Reports suggest that elementary-aged children contract up to a dozen cases of the flu every school year. Still, there are some behaviors you can instill in them to keep their immune systems at the front of the class when it comes to resisting illnesses.

Avoid Heat StrokeWhile it’s important to get out and enjoy the outdoors, heart patients may need to take special precautions to avoid heat exhaustion during the summer.

In addition to those with a history of heart problems, people who are over 50 years old or overweight should also check with their healthcare professional before beginning an exercise routine. Some heart medications such as diuretics, beta blockers, ace inhibitors, ace receptor blockers and calcium channel blockers can increase the possibility of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Image of healthy men talking while grillingWith June being recognized as Men’s Health Month, it’s an opportune time for men to be proactive in addressing their well-being.

Statistically, men are more at risk for less healthy lifestyles and shorter lifespans than women – partially because women visit their doctors for annual exams and screenings at twice the rate of men.

Jefferson Surgical Clinic, serving Virginia’s Roanoke Valley, offers many services and screenings that can help men stay on top of their health:

Vascular Screenings

An important method of detecting problems before they strike, vascular screenings can help identify potential health risks such as stroke, aortic aneurysmal disease, carotid occlusive disease and peripheral arterial disease. There are three pain-free tests we offer to screen for strokes, aneurysms and vascular diseases.

Varicose veins can be more than a cosmetic concern causing you to cover your legs in the summer – they can also pose health problems that require treatment.

Surgeons at Jefferson Surgical Clinic can treat varicose veins with an effective process known as endovenous laser ablation.

Varicose veins are enlarged, gnarled veins, most commonly occurring in the legs and feet due to increased pressure from standing and walking. Oftentimes, varicose veins are basically a cosmetic issue – but some people experience pain and discomfort from them. The condition may also signal other more serious circulatory problems.
