Keep your brain healthy: Dementia is known to be associated with hearing loss, and many experts suspect that treating hearing loss can prevent or delay memory problems. Keep your balance: People in middle age (40-69) with even mild hearing loss are nearly three times more likely to have a…
Diagnostic Hearing Tests
Hearing problems can stem from a variety of causes with different parts of the ear. Our tests can help determine the cause for hearing difficulties and help to decide on the best way to address them. Otoacoustic Emissions Test This test measures the response of the inner ear to a sound. This test can be used to evaluate newborns and other patients who can’t respond to other hearing tests. A tiny probe is inserted into the ear canal, and then tones or clicks are produced. The echo response is recorded and measured. Pure Tone Testing For this test, the…

The Link Between Hearing and Brain Changes
Patients with hearing loss have a greater risk for dementia, falls, hospitalizations, and other physical and mental health problems. For years, researchers have known that hearing loss was associated with changes in the brain, but were unsure whether these brain changes happened before or after the hearing impairment occurred. Recent research conducted as part of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging was able to track significant differences in brain changes over time in participants with hearing impairments compared to those with normal hearing. Participants were given a complete physical, including hearing tests, as well as yearly magnetic resonance imaging…
Heart Health Month Tip: Cut Down On Sodium
Most Americans get too much sodium in their diets. Excess sodium causes the body to retain too much water, contributing to conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems. You might think the answer is just to hide the salt shaker at the table, but most sodium in the American diet comes from restaurant food and packaged foods, even ones that don’t taste salty, like cookies and breads. This extra salt extends the food’s shelf life but may shorten yours. Some steps you can take to reduce the sodium in your diet: Prepare more of your…

You Don’t Have To Live With Spider Veins
Unsightly spider veins are those small varicose veins that appear as jagged purple and blue lines visible through the skin. Other factors include aging, pregnancy, prior trauma or surgery to the leg. Spider veins may be unsightly and sometimes painful, but rarely are a serious health treat. They tend to develop more often in women than in men and increase…
