Harter 1After 24 years of providing ENT services for our community, Dr. Geoff Harter will retire October 5th. The physicians and staff of Jefferson Surgical Clinic wish Dr. Harter the very best in retirement and thank him for many years of expert, compassionate care for his patients.

If you are a patient of Dr. Harter, your medical records will be maintained at Jefferson Surgical Clinic.

Jefferson Surgical Clinic's board certified ENT physician - Dr. Gregory Zachmann - will continue to offer their extensive experience and training in Roanoke, Salem, and surrounding Virginia and West Virginia communities.

At Jefferson Surgical Clinic, we know that managing expectations and establishing goals for patients before vascular treatment are essential for a good outcome. But all patients have questions about recovery after vascular surgery. Maybe you aren’t sure which activities are safe to perform, or when it’s appropriate to take prescribed medications.

Dr. Daniel Clair is Chairman of the Department of Vascular Surgery at Cleveland Clinic, and he gives some very helpful tips on post-operative recovery in this video. Watch as he discusses what to expect after surgical treatment.

Due to the many recent changes in healthcare regulations and the Affordable Care Act (ACA), starting on January 1st, 2014 the Jefferson Surgical Clinic will be asking for your insurance card at each visit.

Please remember to bring it with you for every appointment. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Effective January 1st, 2013, the Jefferson Surgical Clinic ENT doctors will no longer be seeing patients at the Braeburn Drive location. All future appointments with Dr. Zachmann will be at the 1234 Franklin Road S.W. office in Roanoke. ENT patient files and paperwork will automatically be transferred.

Jefferson Surgical's Braeburn office will continue to see neurosurgery and spine surgery patients.

If you have questions regarding the ENT department, please contact us.

The Jefferson Surgical Clinic is sponsoring an event to honor our founding partner, Dr. Robert L.A. Keeley and his Healing Arts Program for Carilion Clinic.

On June 14th community members will gather together and celebrate Dr. Keeley’s lifetime of service to patients and physician leadership. Funds raised will benefit Dr. Keeley’s Healing Arts program, designed to create restorative and calming environments for patients, visitors and staff by integrating the creative arts into the healing process.

The Jefferson Surgical Clinic is proud to offer our support and congratulations to Dr. Keeley at this special event.

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month! In celebration the Jefferson Surgical Clinic has put together a list of 20 hearing facts, statistics, definitions, and JSC service information. Learn more about hearing right here, on our Facebook page, and in our offices.

1.) Approximately 600 million people worldwide have hearing loss

2.) Some medications can cause tinnitus, or ringing of the ears. Ask your prescribing physician if the medications you’re taking could be harmful to your ears.

3.) Loud sounds in everyday life are a leading cause of hearing loss.  Jefferson Surgical Clinic can provide customized hearing protection for use with lawn mowers, weed-eaters and firearms.

4.) A 12-year study conducted by the neurology department at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine found that untreated hearing loss increased the risk for dementia.

5.) Eustachian tube dysfunction is that “plugged up feeling” some people experience in their ears. The otolaryngologists at Jefferson Surgical Clinic are specialists trained to treat Eustachian tube dysfunction.

GO Orange Day

Charlie Harris jumped in with both feet, painting his boots orange, to get in the spirit of the Go Orange campaign.

The Staff at Jefferson Surgical Clinic presented a check this week for $1,500 to the Feeding America Southwest Virginia Food Bank in honor of the Clinic’s 16 physicians as part of the “Go Orange” campaign sponsored by FASWVA.

“We all feel privileged to be participating in such a worthwhile cause, and made this a company-wide initiative to collect ‘change for Change’ knowing it will benefit people right here in our community who are going hungry,” said Karen Tuttle, CEO of Jefferson Surgical Clinic. “It is gratifying and overwhelming to know that because of the efforts of FASWVA, our donation of $1,500 translates into $12,500 worth of food for those in need” she adds.

Jefferson Surgical Clinic has been helping patients through their quality care and dedication to health and wellness for 55 years in the Roanoke Valley and surrounding areas. Jefferson Surgical Clinic has 16 board certified physicians offering expert care in 7 different specialties.

From now until December 15th our staff is participating in the Change for Change fundraising event to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank. For every dollar we raise Second Harvest will be able to buy $8 worth of food for those in need. So we’re digging around in our pockets, checking the sofa cushions, jiggling the penny jars, and raiding our washing machines for loose change. Prizes will be awarded for Heaviest Collection, Highest Dollar Value Collection, and Favorite Collection Container. Stay tuned to find out who the winner is, and if you’d like to help a staff member raise change or just donate a little something for prosperity, feel free to offer some of your spare change to our general collection container the next time you’re at JSC for an appointment – or even if you’re just in the neighborhood.

Statistics show that one out of every six men will get prostate cancer, and 32,000 men die from it each year. It’s important to protect yourself from this disease every month, but Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is a great time to remember the risks, get tested and educate yourself about prevention.

Prostate Cancer occurs when cells around the prostate grow beyond their natural life span and form malignant tumors. This particular type of cancer develops slowly, which is why it’s so important to get tested regularly and maintain a proactive prevention approach, including monitoring your diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and getting enough exercise.

Check out the Jefferson Surgical Facebook page all this month for Prostate Cancer prevention tips and information!
