Overview
When varicose veins cause distress or discomfort, the physicians at Jefferson Surgical Clinic can treat them with a highly effective process known as endovenous laser treatment (EVLT). This procedure uses laser heat to treat varicose veins and can greatly reduce swelling as well as alleviate pain and discomfort.
Who is a good candidate?
Those with varicose veins are good candidates for EVLT. Their appearance can be:
- Dark blue, purple or red
- Bulging and chord-like
- Swollen, painful and heavy legs
- Scaly skin changes or ulcerations
What to expect
During EVLT, heat created using a laser is sent into the vein through a thin, flexible catheter. Once the leg has been numbed and a small incision has been made, the catheter is placed in the right position and drawn slowly backward. As the catheter sends out heat, the vein is closed off, stopping blood flow in the problem vein. EVLT is an outpatient procedure that does not require anesthesia. Including preparation time and recovery, treatment only takes about 1 to 3 hours.
