Robert Swanson, M.D., FACS, RPVI Joins Jefferson Surgical Clinic

Military veteran helps to grow JSC general and vascular surgery practice

Roanoke, VA – August 2019. Jefferson Surgical Clinic (JSC) announces the addition of Robert Benjamin Swanson, M.D., FACS to its skilled surgical team. Swanson brings a varied background of surgical experience and expertise in modern techniques in both vascular and general surgery.

“Dr. Swanson is a surgeon of the highest caliber,” says Beth Bankston, Chief Administrative Officer at JSC. “His strong reputation among the Roanoke medical community as an emerging leader began years ago as a local resident. His return to the area and his decision to choose Jefferson Surgical Clinic to serve local patients is an exciting honor.”

Swanson’s experience as a Mobile Field Surgical Team Leader for the United States Air Force equipped him with enhanced training and skillsets to augment JSC’s practice, which specializes in both open and endovascular surgical techniques to care for peripheral artery disease, venous and deep vein disease, carotid artery disease and abdominal aneurysms. He will also provide a broad range of general surgery procedures, including care for thyroid, gallbladder and colon diseases, as well as complex abdominal hernia repair.

“I’m so glad to return to Roanoke and for the pleasure of treating the patient community here,” says Swanson. “I look forward to watching my children grow up here while also being able to add my own contributions to medical care for the region.”

Swanson completed his Residency in General Surgery at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke in 2013 and served as Chief Resident before heading to the Air Force as a general surgeon for four years. He then completed his fellowship in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Wake Forest School of Medicine. He holds a Doctor of Medicine from Eastern Virginia Medical School and is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, Board of Medicine for the Commonwealth of Virginia and the North Carolina Medical Board. He is a recipient of Carilion Medical Center’s Bruce D. Baird, M.D. Research Award and Robert E. Berry, M.D. Award.

Swanson is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and holds memberships with the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, American Military Surgeons of the United States, and the Society of Vascular Surgeons. He and his wife are the parents of seven children. Outside of his surgical practice, he enjoys family time, outdoor recreation and classical music.

Swanson is now accepting patient referrals and appointments. Patients may call JSC at 540-283-6000 to schedule an appointment.
